Tashkurgan
Tashkurgan or Tashkorgan means “stone fort”. in the local language. Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County is located east of the Pamir Plateau, and southwest of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. It is a strategically located small town with an area of 24088.82sq km. It is bordered in the northwest by Tajikistan, in the southwest by Afghanistan, in the south by Pakistan and in the east and southeast by Kargilik and Yarkand counties of Kashgar.

Tashkurgan is an interesting small town located on the Pamir Plateau. This area was extremely isolated until the rebuilding of the Karakoram highway in 1987. Even today, the local community lives in a very traditional fashion with only a single road from Kashgar reaching there. It has retained a certain uniqueness.

There are around 53000 people (according to statistics in 2010) living in Tashkurgan. They are Tajik, Uyghur, Kirgiz, Han and Hui nationalities.
Tashkurgan is 290 km from Kashgar and 1765 km from Urumqi, the regional capital city of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous region.
